Information and application to apply for the NIBIB Scholars Scientific Conference Travel Award

NIBIB is pleased to offer a competitive travel award program for undergraduate, postbaccalaureate, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and early-career investigators to defray the costs of attendance at scientific conferences. The goal of this award is to support the participation of individuals with a demonstrated interest in NIBIB-related research to attend scientific conferences and to meet with NIBIB staff to discuss research career and funding opportunities in biomedical engineering and biomedical imaging.

NIBIB will provide 5-10 travel awards for each of the 2024-2025 scientific conferences listed below. In addition to the events listed below, travel awards to scientific conferences may be available upon request. Please note, NIBIB staff may not be in attendance at events not listed below. For applicants wishing to apply for a travel award for a scientific conference not listed, please contact Dr. Albert Avila no less than four months prior to the meeting date.

2024-2025 Scientific Conferences (5-10 awards per conference)

  • Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES): October 23-26, 2024; Baltimore, MD [Application Deadline: July 1, 2024]
  • SPIE Photonics West: January 25-30, 2025; San Francisco, CA [Application Deadline: October 1, 2024]
  • SPIE Medical Imaging: February 16-20, 2025; San Diego, CA [Application Deadline: October 1, 2024]
  • Society for Biomaterials: (SFB) April 9-12, 2025; Chicago, IL [Application Deadline: January 5, 2025]

Travel award recipients will be reimbursed up to $1,500 (maximum award amount) for travel, lodging, and registration to the meeting. Awardees will be required to submit documentation for expenses following the meeting for reimbursement. In some cases, meeting registrations and travel arrangements may be made and paid for directly by NIBIB. Note that a single applicant may receive only one travel award per year.

Eligibility

Undergraduate, postbaccalaureate, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and early-career investigators (who are not more than 10 years beyond their doctoral degree) conducting biomedical engineering, biomedical imaging, and technology development research. Applications will be evaluated on their own merits and awards will be made across all career levels. (Individuals from underrepresented groups are highly encouraged to apply.)

Application Submission Components

Each application must include:

  1. Completed application form (required)
  2. Resume or curriculum vitae, that includes a list of any publications (if applicable) (required)
  3. Cover letter (one-page or 250-word limit) (required) Cover letter should describe your interest in pursuing biomedical engineering, imaging, and technology development research, and how attending this conference will advance your career goals and research direction.
  4. Project description (one-page or 250-word limit) that includes title, abstract, and research findings of your current research project, if applicable.

NOTE: it is strongly recommended that applicants prepare the submission components prior to completing the online submission form. The submission form does not allow for saving and completing at a later date. The submission form must be completed and submitted at the same time.

Selection & Notification

NIBIB seeks to provide awards to individuals from various career stages whose meeting attendance will advance their biomedical engineering and biomedical imaging career and research opportunities. Priority will be given to those who have submitted a poster or oral presentation and/or who do not have sufficient funding to support their attendance. Applicants will be notified about the award decision no less than 45 days prior to the meeting.
