NIBIB is participating in the Data and Technology Advancement (DATA) National Service Scholar Program led by NIH's Office of Data Science and Strategy (ODSS). This program brings talented professionals with experience in and knowledge of data and computer sciences and related fields to advance high-impact programs at NIH.
Current NIBIB DATA National Service Scholars
Analyzing the Nation’s Over-the-Counter Testing Data
NIBIB DATA Scholar: Yi Huang, Ph.D.
Dr. Huang is working with NIBIB’s Dr. Andrew Weitz to perform a comprehensive analysis of the federal government’s over-the-counter COVID-19 testing dataset, which will ultimately lead to a set of recommendations, opportunities, and limitations regarding use of self-test data for public health surveillance.
Exploration of wearable device data in predicting clinical outcomes
NIBIB DATA Scholar: Mohd Anwar, Ph.D.
Dr. Anwar is working with NIBIB's Dr. Andrew Weitz to explore how wearable device data from different sources can be aggregated and analyzed to draw meaningful scientific insights, such as detection, risk stratification, or prediction of disease.
Past NIBIB DATA National Service Scholars
NIBIB DATA Scholar: Brad Bower, Ph.D.
Dr. Bower worked with NIBIB’s Dr. Kris Kandarpa to grow and scale MIDRC by advancing opportunities for interoperability between NIH data repositories, exploring public-private partnerships in the data ecosystem, and promoting the bench-to-bedside data lifecycle for artificial intelligence (AI) product development.
NIBIB DATA Scholar: Judy Wawira Gichoya, M.D.
Dr. Gichoya worked on the NIH Common Fund program DS-I Africa along with NIBIB colleagues Drs. Tiffani Lash and Behrouz Shabestari. DS-I Africa is using data science technologies and prior NIH investments to develop solutions to the continent's most pressing public health problems.

NIBIB Data Scholar: Mohammad M. Ghassemi, Ph.D.
Dr. Ghassemi worked with NIBIB's Dr. Grace Peng on the NIH BRAIN Initiative Workspace to Organize the Knowledge Space (WORKS) platform, a tool for the discovery of more comprehensive theories of brain function through knowledge integration across multiple sparse, multi-scale data sets collected from a variety of independent research activities. Dr. Ghassemi continues to work on BRAINWORKS as a contractor.

NIBIB DATA Scholar: Rui Carlos Sa, Ph.D.
Dr. Sa worked with NIBIB colleagues Drs. Kris Kandarpa and Guoying Liu on a collaborative network project that is using medical imaging and clinical data sciences to reveal unique features of COVID-19.
