Jonathan Kulwatno

Biography

Dr. Jonathan Kulwatno joined the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) in 2024 as a Program Director in the Division of Discovery Science and Technology (DDST). Prior to joining the NIBIB, Dr. Kulwatno was a AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow (STPF) at the National Science Foundation (NSF) in both the Directorates for Engineering (ENG) and Biological Sciences (BIO), supporting initiatives for emerging technologies in engineering biology and for broadening the base of investigators involved in engineering research. His expertise is in soft biomaterials applied to regenerative therapy, cancer, and military medicine in pre-clinical systems (in vitro and in vivo). 

Dr. Kulwatno is a first-generation graduate who earned his B.S. in Materials Science & Engineering from the University of Florida and his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He completed an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) postdoctoral fellowship at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in association with Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC).
